In a world that often celebrates loud voices and bold actions, we frequently overlook the quiet teachers around us. These individuals, experiences, and moments whisper profound lessons that can guide us if we listen. My journey of self-discovery has been shaped by subtle (and not so subtle) influences, helping me navigate the complexities of emotional release and trauma healing.
As I reflect on my path, I recognize that the lessons I learned were rarely straightforward. They emerged from unexpected places in unplanned moments, like the sound of glass breaking, which served as a powerful metaphor for moments that shattered my preconceived notions and opened my heart to deeper understanding.
The Subtle Art of Listening
Listening is an art that requires practice and patience. In our busy lives, we often put our own thoughts ahead of the wisdom around us. We think of what we will say next while another is speaking. We even overpower our own thoughts and inclinations.
Listening isn't just about hearing sounds and processing the words; it's about suspending your internal dialogue and truly attuning to the experience outside of you. We listen with our ears, yes. But we also listen with our hearts, our eyes, and our energy.
Listening to the universe requires awareness and a willingness to see every person around you, every action, as a teacher. To accept that your experience is an opportunity to see a reflection of yourself, and to be willing to open your heart to the lessons and feelings that arise as you move through this thing we call life.

Embracing the Lessons of Silence
One powerful lesson I'll share is the importance of silence. While society often equates noise with productivity, it can also be a cover-up for what one hopes to avoid. The discomfort we feel in silence usually comes from the inability to quiet the voices within.
As soon as we tune in to hear one of our internal sounds, suddenly a cacophony of voices swells to be heard! They all clamor for attention, and the experience can be overwhelming. But it is the way in which we try to deal with this internal arising that causes the problem.
We try to silence and shudder those voices—to silence the inner mind. And this resistance causes them only to get louder.
What we can do instead is listen to the voices one by one.
We can schedule them to speak at a later date.
We can sit beside and hold space for our internal thoughts and feelings and just let them have their say.
So often, all we really need is to be heard. Not fixed. Just felt.
The Glass That Breaks
The metaphor of glass breaking resonates deeply with my experiences. There have been years that my life fell apart, shattering around me as broken glass does when it hits the floor. Although painful, these moments catalyzed change.
Last year, I experienced several significant losses. It felt like my world and identity both broke apart, forcing me to pick up the pieces. However, in community and in the breath, I've found clarity. Friends, mentors, and even nature acted as my teachers, guiding me to understand that this breaking was not an end but rather a beginning.
During emotional release, I learned to embrace chaos and find beauty in the fragments. Each shard of glass represented a lesson, reminding me that healing is not linear but a journey filled with ups and downs.

Finding Strength in Vulnerability
I didn’t always understand that vulnerability was a strength. In early recovery and before, I thought holding it all together was the only way to survive. But it was sitting in circles—sharing my shame, grief, and hopes—that I learned the opposite.
Each story cracked something open in me. The more honest we became, the safer we felt. Vulnerability wasn’t weakness—it was the doorway to connection, healing, and nervous system regulation.
The Role of Nature as a Teacher
Nature has been one of my greatest healers. After my second divorce, when everything felt like it was crumbling, I found myself walking around my neighborhood and near the lake nearly every day.
The trees held me. The water reminded me that life keeps moving. The birds, butterflies, and dragonflies keep me hopeful and tuned into the transformation taking place, even when I'm not fully aware. Those quiet lessons in resilience mirrored my process of rebuilding.
Research shows that even 20 minutes in nature can boost mental health—I’ve lived that truth. The earth has been my steady teacher, reminding me of my own strength.

The Power of Community
Healing doesn’t happen in isolation. For years, I tried to do everything on my own. When I got sober, that was not an option.
In community—first in recovery groups, then breathwork classes, and retreat groups—I found a different kind of medicine. We practiced grounding, breathing, and co-regulating together. All the humans became my quiet teachers, showing me that healing is collective.
Each of us holds a piece of wisdom that others need. Together, we create space where real transformation can unfold.
Embracing the Quiet Teachers
Looking back, my “quiet teachers” have come in many forms: women brave enough to share their truths, nature that offers me refuge, and the breath that keeps guiding me home. Their lessons are never loud, but they were life-changing.
If you’re on your own path of healing, I invite you to notice your quiet teachers. They may show up in a circle, in nature, in your body, or even in a stranger’s story.
They remind us that beauty can grow from brokenness and that the smallest openings can lead to the deepest healing.
The Journey of Self-Discovery
Self-discovery is a journey, not a destination. It’s a winding path filled with twists and turns. Each step reveals something new about ourselves. We often think we know who we are, but life has a way of surprising us.
As we peel back the layers, we uncover hidden truths. These truths can be uncomfortable, but they are essential for growth. Embracing them allows us to move forward with clarity and purpose.
The Importance of Reflection
Reflection is a crucial part of this journey. Taking time to pause and look back helps us understand our experiences. It allows us to see patterns and recognize the lessons learned.
Journaling can be a powerful tool for reflection. Writing down our thoughts and feelings helps us process them. It creates a safe space to explore our inner world.
Cultivating Mindfulness
Mindfulness is another essential practice. It teaches us to be present in the moment. When we are mindful, we can observe our thoughts without judgment. This awareness opens the door to deeper understanding.
Meditation is a wonderful way to cultivate mindfulness. Even a few minutes a day can make a significant difference. It helps us connect with ourselves and the world around us.
Seeking Support
As we embark on this journey, seeking support is vital. Whether through friends, family, or professionals, having a support system can make all the difference. It reminds us that we are not alone.
Sharing our experiences with others fosters connection. It creates a sense of belonging that is essential for healing. Together, we can navigate the ups and downs of self-discovery.
Embracing Change
Change is inevitable. It’s a natural part of life. As we grow, we may find ourselves in new situations or facing unexpected challenges. Embracing change allows us to adapt and thrive.
We can view change as an opportunity for growth. Each new experience teaches us something valuable. It expands our horizons and deepens our understanding of ourselves.
Celebrating Progress
Finally, it’s essential to celebrate our progress. Each step forward, no matter how small, deserves recognition. Acknowledging our achievements boosts our confidence and motivates us to keep going.
Take a moment to reflect on how far you’ve come. Celebrate the lessons learned and the strength gained. You are on a beautiful journey of self-discovery, and every moment counts.
In this journey, remember to be gentle with yourself. Healing takes time, and it’s okay to move at your own pace. Trust the process and embrace the quiet teachers along the way. They will guide you toward a more connected, embodied, and fulfilling life.
